Moldovan gay man wins case over life threats and bodily harm motivated by prejudice

Justice in Court for Marin Pavlescu, a young man from Moldova who became known for being harassed in the military because of his sexual orientation. After his story gained media attention, Marin was threatened with death over the phone by a Moldovan man in Italy.

In June 2022, the man insulted and threatened Marin, saying he would “cut his legs” and “kill him because he is a faggot”. Marin reported this to the police, and in August 2023, the suspect was arrested when entering the country.

This June, the man received his sentence. He has been ordered to pay a fine of 27,500 lei (around 1 430 euros), 10,000 lei for moral damages (around 520 euros) and 21,500 lei (around 1 120 euros) for Pavlescu’s court costs.

“I am very pleased that a homophobic person will be rightfully punished for what he has done, and I hope that every citizen, before writing a hateful comment or threatening someone from the LGBTQ+ community, understands that we have laws and they will be held accountable for any violations.”, said Marin Pavlescu.

The Eastern European Coalition for LGBT+ Equality advocates for legal resistance and opposes discrimination and oppression. However, in some countries, achieving this is still not possible, as the law often works against LGBT+ individuals.

We look forward to a day when rightful sentences in defense of queer individuals become commonplace.
